Here’s some motivation to show that decarbonisation is both possible and practical in the road freight sector
Truck emissions won’t fall fast enough if we only rely on the rollout of new electric and hydrogen technologies.
We need to change both new trucks and the existing on-road fleet with cost-effective actions.
And we need multiple decarbonisation pathways combining network and trip improvements, fuel efficiency, and alternative fuels and technologies.
So we created the 25x25x25 Challenge to show that significant decarbonisation is possible today, despite all the challenges in road freight.
- We set a target (25%) based on what’s practical to achieve via a combination of pathways but with a big focus on efficiency
- We explained the process fleets can take to get there through our work with NatRoad’s Get Fleet Fit project
- We know it’s urgent – hence the 2025 target
- And we’re now offering a prize of $25,000 to the first fleet to get there
It feels like we’ve done a thousand strategies and policies and programs to decarbonise freight. We know incentives make a big difference, but incentives need to be for the right things if they’re going to be effective. But there are still no incentives to support smaller fleets in the most critical step of their decarbonisation journey – improving efficiency.
So we’re getting the ball rolling.
Use the email link below to request a registration pack, and applicants will have to follow a few simple rules to make sure it’s a fair contest for all.
- 25x25x25 is open to registered businesses with small and medium fleets of 5-50 trucks
- Winner must demonstrate a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (CO2-e) relative to their workload or freight task
- Only new actions count toward the 25% (those started after competition starts 16th September 2024)
- Three quarters (75%) of the saving must be from a combination of fuel efficiency and operational improvements (no offsetting)
- Need to follow a stepped process like Get Fleet Fit or equivalent energy program
- Data to be shared as evidence via application template (6 months baseline prior to improvements and 3 months after implemented projects)
- Emissions reductions must be implemented and data submitted by 15 December 2025
- Winner is the first to achieve the target, with results and method published in a case study.
- Winner to be announced on this website after results are verified (latest 31 December 2025)
